Maria Hannibal was born in London, but spent most of her years in Kent. After many confrontations, and working with mixed media she decided to move to Italy to widen her artistic intentions, mixing music, art & textiles together and attended various art courses which enabled her to work towards her degree.

She exhibited all over Italy after which she took a part in new underground ventures. Searching to make her black not feel imprisoned and make her black come alive but her black could be blue green or red. Black is a part of her life, she often quotes “it is impossible to touch the pink of tomorrow”.

A lot of her projects emphasise the certain intimacy between language and image, herself and other, hence is born her painting spectres.

Later on she decided to open up her own gallery called Yellow, this widened her art to collectors from other European countries as well countries such as Japan which made her genre, ‘Spectres - divorced from reality’ …brrrrreathe. She will also remember the fantastic support from a local gallery and local art collectors on her return to Deal.

She continues to work in various media such as Plexiglas, celluloid, gesso, car paints, oils, acrylics, natural pigments, wood & industrial organic waste searching always for harmony. Her camera also plays an important part in her artistic mission being her third eye and finding that which is hidden, making the connection with her Spectres.

Maria will also be grateful for the kindness and encouragement shown her by Mimmo Rotella, who sadly passed away in 2006.
